One-day conference covers optimising automotive components for cost, weight and fatigue durability using residual strain and damage measurements to improve CAE models.

The Engineering Integrity Society is holding a one-day conference on optimising automotive components for cost, weight and fatigue durability using residual strain and damage measurements to improve CAE models Steels have been, and remain, vital in the production of automotive components and assemblies

In the current climate, pressure exists in all companies to reduce weight, lead time and manufacturing cost simultaneously.

Environmental benefits must also be shown in all areas of production and use.

Additionally, the commitment to the design of new products is increasingly being made on the basis of CAE modelling before prototypes are available, and timescales for this virtual engineering are being reduced dramatically.

This one day conference comprises papers and discussions on the essential issues of monitoring the material, its residual strain from delivery through manufacture and the accumulation of fatigue damage.

Understanding of the effect of manufacture and cyclic loading on these parameters benefits engineers and customers alike.

As well as the programme of technical presentations, a MAP system will be demonstrated.

A number of multichannel rigs will be shown with differing control strategies testing real components.

Test facilities characterising materials will be shown.

The application of the MAPS system to measure residual strains, material condition and fatigue damage using the example of a real component will be presented in the GKN durability laboratory.

Open discussions, which are an essential part of the day, will be held after each presentation.

The conference will be held at GKN AutoStructures, Telford, UK on Tuesday 24th October 2006.
