Ethernet scores at the games

An Entrix Computing product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Sep 9, 2002

Entrix Computing was recently asked to supply the technology behind connecting the various scoring devices used at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Industrial automation and sport share common goals - the need for accurate timing.

Proving that technology knows no boundaries, Entrix Computing has been supplying both the industrial and IT markets with serial connectivity over Ethernet networks for many years and was recently asked to supply the technology behind connecting the various scoring devices used at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Badminton and clay pigeon shooting were just two of the diverse disciplines that used serial instrumentation linked to central computers via Ethernet to track and register the scoring.

Two methods had been chosen depending on the event location and/or distance from the central servers.

Connectivity over longer distances was achieved by installing Digi Etherlite units, which can connect up to 32 serial ports at any point on an Ethernet network.

Scoring data were passed back to the central servers regardless of the distance from the serial device to the server.

Where a server could be located close to the serial devices, USB was the method of choice.

Edgeport units, which support up to 16 serial ports in one USB connection, were installed for a number of the events.

Neil Fore, IT Technology Manager for Manchester 2002 said, "Using Digi equipment simplified the cabling and connectivity for the event.

We had a few teething troubles to start with, but the technical department at Entrix was able to solve our problems.

Entrix have been very responsive to ensure that everything was up and running for the start of the Games".
