The security of control systems can be revolutionised with the introduction of the electronic key system (EKS) introduced by Euchner.
This groundbreaking system will allow access to PCs and control systems without the need for passwords through the use of an electronic key and matching key mount.
EKS works through a memory chip and antenna, which are inserted into the key.
The chip is a battery-free 125kHz transponder which transfers data inductively to an antenna in the key mount when the key holder logs in.
One of the main advantages of the EKS is its flexibility.
There are an infinite number of possible keys, each holding different data and access, with keys assigned depending upon the keyholder responsibilities.
One of the primary benefits of this is that it would be clear when and who carried out any changes, in line with ISO9000.
If a key is lost, expensive replacements are avoided simply by deleting the individual key's access option through an administrator, which can be managed on site or at a separate workstation.
The key can then be restored with new programming.
Because the transfer of the data is carried out without contact, the key mount can be designed with high protection IP67.
A mount can be installed in every control panel with standard 33 x 68mm cutout and fastened from the rear of the panel, eliminating unauthorised manipulation.
The connection to the PC is achieved through a serial interface with a supply lead of up to 1000m length, communicating data according to the 3964R protocol.
The data carrier in the key is available in two designs, depending on the database concept applied; a freely programmable E2PROM chip with 116byte of available memory or a 5byte ROM chip with consecutive coding.
To facilitate companies looking to integrate EKS within their existing systems, a technical manual with the relevant command system as well as a Visual Basic ActiveX module to support software integration in a Windows environment is also provided.
