Safety relay promises simple configuration

An Euchner product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 20, 2005

The ESM-F fills the gap between simple safety relays and safety PLCs.

Althought there may be many safety relays available in the market, Euchner reckons its new modular ESM-F safety relay offers numerous important advantages.

The ESM-F fills the gap between simple safety relays and safety PLCs.

The elimination of programming means that these relays can be claimed to be the simplest to install from all similar-function products currently available.

With a centrally mounted base module giving two inputs and three safety outputs, extra inputs can be fitted to the left and outputs to the right.

These can be grouped to give zoned inputs and outputs by simply inserting a link.

The interconnection of relays has been considerably simplified with the use of a serial bus connection which sits in the DIN rail and provides a high degree of "plug and play".

The input modules will accept noncontact switches, mechanical switches and E-stop buttons to be connected and the output modules can have instantaneous (stop category 0) or timed (stop category 1) output contacts.

This degree of versatility in safety technology has been mooted for some time, but the arrival of the ESM-F unit ensures that it has now become a reality.

The need for special programming and internal wiring has been eliminated.

Moreover, with the introduction of the ESM-F, diagnostics which were not previously achievable with standard products have now become practicable and realistic.

The base module provides diagnostics for both inputs and outputs in the form of LEDs and solid-state outputs.

Individual input status is also achieved through solid-state outputs.

All modules are individually pluggable and the system is optionally extendable, complying with safety category 4 (to EN954-1).
