The course is listed by TUV Sud in its course providers list, and is suitable as preparation for achieving CFSE or CFST status.

The course is designed for those who manage, design, implement, maintain and operate safety-instrumented systems (SIS).

Covering the Safety Life Cycle in moderate depth, the course reviews the various skills and techniques needed to comply with the IEC standards.

It is specifically designed as a broad review in preparation for the Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE) process application engineering exam.

The CFSE certification program meets the international requirement that these personnel be competent in the activities they have been assigned.

Attendees will learn the following: principles of risk management; safety life cycle requirements for IEC 61508 and IEC 61511; Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessment; Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA); SIS design from requirements analysis and documentation; and SIL verification and validation.

Course topics include: overview of reliability engineering, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), the safety life cycle, functional safety management, safety instrumented system (SIS) design, SIS technologies, major design issues, functional safety assessment, verification and validation concepts.

Also covered are: fault-tolerant architectures, sensor architectures, final element architectures, Safety Instrumented Function design, SIF verification and examples, system engineering and installation, pre-startup safety review techniques, operations and management of change.
