Petro-Canada is working towards the implementation of the latest functional safety standards within its corporate procedures.

The functional safety standards describe the concept of the safety lifecycle in which functional safety is achieved through a number of steps taken throughout the life of a plant and which employs the concept of quantitative risk reduction targets.

As part of this effort, the use of automated tools was considered to simplify safety lifecycle tasks and strive for consistent implementation of the functional safety standards.

As a result, Petro-Canada has installed the exida exSILentia integrated safety lifecycle tool on its corporate network for use by all of its downstream refinery facilities and offices.

"We have reviewed many of the safety lifecycle tools available on the market; many where able to model the majority of our safety instrumented functions, however only one tool provided a integrated equipment database and third-party 61508 assessment, making safety lifecycle tasks effective and efficient", says Dusan Ondrejech, instrument specialist, process, technology and reliability of Petro-Canada's refining and supply department.

Dusan is responsible for the implementation of the safety lifecycle tools within refining and supply.

Before installation of exSILentia on the Petro-Canada server, the tool was already used for several major expansion projects with considerable success and was praised by both Petro-Canada and the engineering contractors.
