Fluorescence sheds light on microscopy samples

An Exfo Electro-Optical Engineering product story

The X-Cite 120 fluorescence illumination system is based on EXFO's light-based curing technology and is ideal for fluorescence microscopy applications.

The X-Cite 120 fluorescence illumination system is based on EXFO's light-based curing technology and is ideal for fluorescence microscopy applications because it provides excellent image quality, lower operating costs and improved productivity.

It uses a 120W lamp to deliver rich spectral excitation with a more uniform field of view than conventional fluorescence illumination systems.

The proprietary Intelli-Lamp technology helps to provide more than 1.5kh of lamp life, enabling customers to save time and money with significantly fewer lamp replacements.

The X-Cite 120 system is pre-aligned to make changing lamps a fast and simple one-step process.

"We have taken our core expertise in light-based curing and adapted it to fluorescence illumination systems, with the aid of microscope manufacturers, in order to leverage our existing technology into new markets", said Allan Firhoj, General Manager of EXFO Photonic Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of EXFO.

"With more than 1500 hours of lamp life and optional intensity control, the X-Cite 120 system provides improved image quality, increased value and greater convenience that was not available using conventional lighting systems".

The X-Cite 120 is a self-contained illumination unit separate from a microscope.

A simple light guide attachment through custom-coupling optics ensures a uniform field of view with no heat from the lamp being transferred to the sample.

The output intensity of the X-Cite 120 system can also be adjusted from the optional front-panel control.

EXFO is the industry leader in light-based, adhesive spot-curing as well as curing process control for the manufacturing of fibre-optic, optoelectronic and medical components.

Its products deliver fixed levels of the appropriate spectral light onto precise target areas.

As a pioneer in the field, the company has several patents related to its light-based, adhesive curing systems, including one involving the "smart lamp" technology used in the X-Cite 120 system.
