With the price of stainless steel increasing dramatically, it is important to be aware of the latest developments in welding technologies that can help to minimise production costs.
ESAB has published the latest copy of Svetsaren, its 50-page journal that covers developments in welding equipment, consumables, applications and related topics.
It has an emphasis on stainless steel welding and environmental issues.
Stainless steels are the fastest growing group of construction materials, with an increase in consumption of around 5% per year.
However, with the price of stainless steel increasing dramatically, it is important to be aware of the latest developments in welding technologies that can help to minimise production costs without compromising quality.
Equipment, consumables and applications for the welding of stainless steels feature heavily in the new ESAB magazine.
There are in-depth technical articles about strip cladding, MMA welding of pipe and sheet, and the selection of shielding gases for Mig and Tig welding of duplex stainless steels.
Application stories describe projects as diverse as vessels to contain superconducting magnets in liquid helium at -269C, semi-automated production of beer barrels, and desalination plants - in which duplex stainless steels are welded to aluminium bronze and other exotic alloys.
In some industries, high-strength, corrosion-resistant supermartensitic steels are an economical alternative to stainless steels.
An interesting development here is the use of laser-hybrid welding techniques, and Svetsaren contains a case study that explains how a manufacturer of lorry chassis has reduced the cost of fixturing thanks to the lower heat input from this process causing less distortion.
Furthermore, welding speeds are more than six times higher than conventional Mig welding in some welds, and fatigue life is doubled.
As well as the articles focusing on stainless steel and supermartensitic steels, the new issue of Svetsaren also has a wealth of information relating to other types of welding and cutting.
In addition, ESAB has become one of only a small number of organisations to be awarded global ISO14001 certification.
In ESAB's case, the certification covers development, design, production, sales and services relating to welding and cutting products.
While this is good for the environment, it also benefits ESAB's customers as a result of less hazardous compounds, less packaging waste, fewer welding defects, reduced energy consumption and less administration.
