ESAB sponsors Shipweld competition

An ESAB product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 19, 2009

ESAB is sponsoring the inaugural 2009 Shipweld competition in which five UK shipyards will compete against each other to demonstrate the welding skills of their trainees.

The competition is expected to bring positive benefits in terms of fostering skills and raising safety awareness.

Successful entrants will be encouraged to compete in the biannual Skillweld contest and represent the UK in future international welding competitions, leading up to World Skills 2011, which London will host for the first time in 30 years.

The five yards taking part in Shipweld 2009 are Babcock Marine (Rosyth), BVT (Portsmouth/Southampton/Clyde) and BAE Systems (Barrow).

Entrants will face a series of craft challenges using MIG/MAG and MMA techniques.

These have been designed to test key welding requirements for the manufacture of surface and sub-surface vessels.

Each shipyard will run internal competitions in June 2009, with awards to first, second and third place.

The top two entrants from each yard then go forward to the Shipweld final at Barrow in November 2009, where the overall winner will be decided.

Finalists will have to complete three weld test pieces, which they must butt weld, fillet and curve surface within a time limit of six hours.

All competitors will be using the latest ESAB CC/CV multi-process equipment, as well as ESAB consumables.
