ESAB to supply welding consumables

An ESAB product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 5, 2009

ESAB has won a contract to supply in excess of 15 tonnes of Tig (tungsten inert gas) welding wire and MMA (manual metal arc) welding electrodes to the Whitegate Independent Power Plant (IPP).

The 450MW Whitegate IPP combined-cycle gas turbine power station for Bord Gais is currently being constructed in Cork, in the Republic of Ireland, by H A O'Neil on behalf of Gamma Construction.

When tests were conducted with the ESAB consumables, the welders achieved better results and a higher success rate, which will translate into financial savings in the construction project.

ESAB said it was able to offer a lower price than its competitors, despite supplying the consumables via a local distributor, Gas-Weld.

When tendering for the contract, ESAB first had to establish which of its welding wires and electrodes would be appropriate for the given applications.

Tony Johnson, the technical information officer for arc consumables at ESAB (UK), proposed the following: Filarc 56S electrodes and PZ6500 Tig Filler wire for ASTM A106 Grade B; OK 76.18 electrodes and OK Tigrod 13.16 wire for ASTM A335 P11; OK 76.28 electrodes and OK Tigrod 13.17 wire for ASTM A335 P22; and OK 76.98 electrodes and OK Tigrod 13.38 wire for ASTM A335 P91.

The first of these four applications is a carbon manganese steel, whereas the other three are creep-resistant alloy steels.

In addition to identifying the right wires and electrodes, Johnson calculated the weld metal volumes in order that an accurate estimate could be made for the consumables required.

At one point in the tendering process it was necessary to have consumables delivered to the site at short notice for welding tests and for the welding procedures to be checked.

ESAB was able to arrange for the right products to be delivered from a warehouse in Europe in less than 48 hours.

All of the welding tests were passed first time, resulting in the welding wires and electrodes being approved by Gamma Power.

The welding operatives also expressed a preference for the ESAB rods over the rods provided by other suppliers.

Using the ESAB products gave a better success rate, which will result in reduced rework and lower construction costs.
