Manual and actuated process valves for acid plant

A Truflo International product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 18, 2001

FCx Truflo Rona and FCx Orton have secured a major contract to supply manual and actuated process valves to one of the world's largest Pure Terephthalic Acid plants

FCx Truflo Rona and FCx Orton - both part of the FCX International group of specialist flow control companies - have secured a major contract to supply manual and actuated process valves to one of the world's largest Pure Terephthalic Acid (PTA) plants.

FCx Truflo Rona - an international leader in the manufacture of high performance ball, gate, globe, and check valves for the process industry - secured the contract despite intense competition from Europe and North America.

FCx Orton completed a clean sweep for the group by being awarded a contract for triple eccentric, metal seated process valves and the total value of the combined orders exceeded US$ 2 million.

The 450,000 tonne per annum plant utilises DuPont technology and will be located in Yizheng in the mid-eastern region of China.

This will be customer Yizheng Chemical Fibre's second PTA plant, their first having been in operation since 1994 employing the BP Amoco process license.

Yizheng Chemical Fibre Company produces and sells polyester chips and polyester fibre.

It also manufactures chemical fibre and petrochemical products.

It also develops textile machinery and is a major player in the research and development of textile technology.

The PTA finished product is a fine white, free flowing powder produced by a two-stage process in which paraxylene is initially oxidised in the presence of air and a catalyst/acetic acid to produce a crude intermediate.

This is purified using hydrogen reduction to yield the final product, which is more than 99.9 percent pure.

The main uses of PTA are for production of polyester fibres and also polyester film - used widely in audio and video recording tapes and photographic film.

During the process the medium is in the form of a high temperature, corrosive slurry.

The valves, of which the majority are ball valves, are manufactured in exotic materials such as Hastelloy(r), titanium, duplex and super duplex stainless steels to combat the corrosive effects of the PTA slurry.

Trevor Fairhurst, Sales and Marketing Executive of FCx Truflo Rona, commented: 'We have an enviable supply record of process valves in exotic materials for the very demanding service conditions associated with the manufacture of PTA.

Without doubt a key factor in this decision was the fact that FCx Truflo Rona valves are employed on the customer's biggest plant and have given seven years trouble free service to date.'.
