FCX has completed the critical supply of replacement bellows sealed globe valves for the reactor moderator systems at the Bruce B nuclear power station.

Global flow control distributor and manufacturer FCX has completed the critical supply of replacement bellows sealed globe valves for the reactor moderator systems at the Bruce B nuclear power station - and secured similar work on the Number 7 and number 8 reactors.

The group's two specialist suppliers to the nuclear industry, FCX Newman Hattersley based in Mississauga near Toronto in Canada and FCX Thompson Valves from Poole in England, worked together with Bruce Power on the project.

It was a project revisited for FCX Newman Hattersley, the supplier of the original equipment more than 25 years ago.

This time, it provided the replacement products in new materials specified by AECL for use in CANDU moderator systems.

The valves supplied were so critical to the outage programme that they had to be changed in advance of other activities on the refurbishment schedule.

This required FCX Newman Hattersley and FCX Thompson Valves to guarantee a timed delivery for the commencement of the first two planned outages.

Working in close consultation with the procurement team at Bruce Power, FCX Newman Hattersley was able to advance supply specifications and software requirements so they were ready to react as soon as the order was placed.

"This fast track approach to manufacturing valve parts for the required 3 and 4in bellows sealed ASME Class 1 nuclear global valves was crucial in the overall success of the Number 5 reactor project", explained Brian Ellis of FCX.

"We achieved on-time delivery for the valves for the moderator systems as planned.

Meeting the critical dates boosted Bruce Power's programmed outage, and we completed Reactor 6 outage valves to plan by the end of 2001, giving the outage planning team at Bruce B even more confidence for the work scheduled in 2002".

"We are genuinely delighted to have secured an enhanced programme of supply for the Bruce B reactor outage programmes for Reactor 7 and Reactor 8 as a result of this effective approach".

FCX Newman Hattersley's Lorne Nakonechny concluded: "By providing OEM products and support services, utility operators worldwide should have even more confidence in placing critical systems and critical path outage business with us, knowing that we will commit to professional delivery on time and to the agreed programme".
