Fluid Conditioning Systems has recently designed and developed a magnetic filtration device specifically for wind turbine gearboxes.

The design, called a prefilter unit, spins on before the conventional filter and brings an array of additional benefits.

The device is designed not to incur a significant pressure drop and can therefore be introduced to the system without risk of compromising fluid flow.

The fluid passes through regions of very high magnetic flux gradient that cause ferrous and some nonferrous contaminant down to less than 1um to be pulled out.

The contaminant is then kept out of the flow in 3D storage zones Initial trials have shown that the Magnom increases the life of the conventional filter dramatically and most importantly removes the fine contaminant that is responsible for the chain reaction of wear, thereby extending the gearbox and valve lives.
