Steady growth for industrial fastener markets

A The Freedonia Group product story

US industrial fastener demand is forecast to rise 5.6% annually through 2007 to $11.5 billion.

Demand will be fuelled by healthy increases in durable goods production and construction spending as business conditions improve following the early 2000s recession.

Faster economic growth will also help support increases in aftermarket fastener demand, although improvements in fastener quality will restrain maintenance/repair/operations (MRO) sales gains to some extent.

Electrical and electronic equipment manufacturing, construction and services will be among the fastest growing end use markets for fasteners.

These and other trends are presented in "Industrial fasteners", a new study from The Freedonia Group.

Sales of higher performance speciality product types, which include most application specific standard fasteners and aerospace grade fasteners, will register the strongest gains, with demand for these two product categories expected to exceed $3 billion in 2007.

Demand for application specific standard fasteners will grow at a faster pace than other standard fastener types, as more original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) replace commodity items with specialised designs.

Sales of aerospace grade fasteners will be bolstered by renewed strength in aircraft production.

Use of these items in demanding nonaerospace, nonmilitary settings will increase as well.

Sales of plastic fasteners, many of which can be classified as specialty products, will approach $1 billion in 2007, benefiting from the development of stronger, better performing plastics.

Functional competition from alternative joining technologies such as adhesives, clinching and welding will remain intense, both in OEM and construction markets.

However, advances in industrial fastener technology will blunt the impact of these competitive technologies on product demand in a number of markets.

Innovations in fastener design include new generations of self locking and self sealing fasteners, units that can be installed without the use of tools, and fasteners fabricated from advanced alloys, composites and plastic materials.

"Industrial fasteners" is available for $3900 from The Freedonia Group.
