Automation specialist Festo has launched a range of miniature pneumatic grippers with a focus on high levels of precision.
Entitled "The amazing world of pneumatics", the new book takes an innovative approach to the subject by starting with a look at the future of pneumatics before returning to the present then delving back into history.
The objective met by the authors, Gerhart Vogel and Eugen Muhlberger, was to produce a book that entertains both the technology fan and the layperson with interesting and amusing pneumatic applications - from football robots to artificial hearts and lifelike animated androids.
Other chapters cover a variety of fascinating and challenging subjects like intelligent pneumatics, bus technology, the Internet as a key to competitiveness, and the (virtually invisible) world of nanotechnology, while practical pneumatics applications from a myriad of industry sectors include automotive, food, bottling, packaging and printing, plastics, aerospace and health.
Despite researching the subject from the strength of a background in industrial journalism, even the authors admitted to being surprised: "The more we researched, the more we ourselves were amazed by all the services that good old air performs".
"The amazing world of pneumatics" is not a textbook, but a book full of ideas about all the things that can be achieved with air.
In doing so, it inherently succeeds in defining the state-of-the-art of pneumatics technology but also remains an entertaining read.
In addition, working as it does on several levels, the book offers specialists and engineers a vendor-independent overview of the versatility of modern industrial pneumatics, and finishes with a detailed listing (particularly useful for automation technology students) of institutions involved in practical pneumatics research and education.
The book is available from Festo priced at GBP 19.99. Request free introductory details about products from Festo ...
