Safety approval for valve controller

An Emerson Process Management - Fisher Valves product story

The Fisher Fieldvue DVC6000 Series digital valve controller has received certification from TUV, the internationally recognised, German-based inspection authority.

The Fisher Fieldvue DVC6000 Series digital valve controller has received certification from TUV, the internationally recognised, German-based inspection authority.

With this certification, industrial manufacturers worldwide can apply DVC6000 instruments to emergency shutdown (ESD) valves in safety instrumented systems (SIS).

Emerson asked a third-party authority in automation safety and product reliability to conduct tests and analyse the performance of the Fisher Fieldvue DVC6000 Series digital valve controller.

These tests included a complete "failure mode effect and diagnostic analysis" (FMEDA).

Results prove that the product complies with International standards including IEC61508 for functional safety, and is suitable for use up to and including SIL3 applications.

Riyaz Ali, a Fieldvue Product Manager at Fisher, says the TUV certification process is comprehensive and thorough.

"It not only covers detailed FMEDA tests of every component of the digital valve controller, but also evaluates all Fisher internal procedures and manufacturing competence, to ensure compliance with IEC61508 requirements", he said.

"With TUV certification, Fieldvue instrument users can be confident about applying digital valve controllers in safety-instrumented systems".

Emergency shutdown or block valves are designed to take the process to a safe state if certain, prespecified operating limits are exceeded.

Adding a digital valve controller to these critical valves offers numerous benefits.

With the DVC6000 instrument, users can conduct partial-stroke tests of the valve while the process is online.

Simplified and secure testing procedures facilitate more frequent testing and continuous monitoring.

Users can also improve their predictive maintenance through diagnostic capabilities, enabling them to detect valve problems early, before they become covert failures.

Finally, Fieldvue DVC6000 users can time- and date-stamp their valve-performance data to aid the documentation requirements of IEC61508.

Dr William M Goble, a professional engineer and a certified functional safety expert, confirms that responsible manufacturers contract for third-party product evaluation and approval.

"These tests provide a conservative product failure rate, and diagnostic data for the purpose of safety integrity verification", he said.

"Potential customers in the safety market should ask for this data before ordering and applying the product in their plant".
