Watertight enclosure ideal for theme park photos

A Fibox product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 9, 2000

When RX Technology needed a water-tight, weatherproof enclosure to mount and protect the trigger and flash units, Fibox was able to solve the problem using its EK range of housings

Having your photo taken as you descend from the heights of a white knuckle ride may just make your day.

Derby based company RX Technology uses a digital camera to take photos of individual couples on theme park rollercoasters, such as Oblivion and Nemesis at Alton Towers.

The camera is activated by a laser trigger which stands alongside the ride.

When RX Technology needed a water-tight, weatherproof enclosure to mount and protect the trigger and flash units, Fibox, the ABS and polycarbonate enclosure specialist, was able to focus in on the problem and solve it using its EK range of housings.

RX Technology required a robust and waterproof enclosure to stand three metres above the ground.

Well protected against any weather condition, the Fibox mounted video screen capture units are stationed on the slope on the way down the ride and the occupants, travelling at over 100 miles per hour, are photographed at the rate of 14 images per second.

The pictures are later displayed at the exit from the ride for all to see.

The photos may be ordered for later collection.

The Fibox housing, according to Peter Whittaker, Sales Director for RX Technology, ensured that the equipment was used safely, "We told Fibox what we needed and the housings we chose were exactly right, they did the job that was required", he said.

The impact resistant EK range of enclosures, identified by RX Technology, have an IP 67 rating, and the final choice was the EKTH and EKOE enclosures with a transparent front.

The order was customised with mounting plates, flanges and flange extensions to suit RX Technology's requirements, with the trigger and flash units being manufactured by Toiga Interactive Ltd., of Derby.

RX Technology has supplied camera units for use on 115 rollercoaster rides all over the world in such disparate places as Alton Towers, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Chessington in the UK, to theme parks in Cape Town in South Africa, Hong Kong and Japan.
