Coni required robust housing to withstand engine heat, as well as hot and dusty road conditions.
Used outdoors and in, the remote controls govern the go-kart's maximum speed.
The remote propulsion control system (PCS), made by Coni Electronics, limits the speed of petrol engines.
Mainly used for go-karts, the devices can also be used to constrain cars and boats.
Each go-kart is fitted with a remote sensor contained in a Fibox MNX polycarbonate enclosure.
Using this radio-controlled unit, the operator retains overall charge of the vehicles, and ensures driver safety at all times.
In case of an emergency, the track supervisor can drop the engine's revs immediately, so that all vehicles slow down.
The PCS 2000V enables the operator to progressively alter the engine's RPM from maximum to idle.
The transmitter is digitally coded to match each receiver, controlling up to 40 vehicles individually.
Selecting the relevant switch will regulate the rpm instantly on the selected go-kart.
The unit incorporates a brake control system as well as an additional remote operating system.
This portable unit allows the operator to leave the main transmitter while retaining the emergency stop function.
The main unit can also be linked to a computer for automatic timing control.
When go-karts are travelling at speeds up to 70 mph, it is vital for operators to be confident that the radio receivers will be fully protected.
"Fibox enclosures are waterproof and dust-proof, which is just what we need for the hostile conditions on a race track," said Tony Herring of Coni Electronics.
"Safety is key, and as this is our transmitter's main function.
We must be confident that the electronic receivers will continue to function, whatever the conditions," he said.
Coni Electronics, at one time, used different housings for its indoor and outdoor receivers.
However, Coni now only use Fibox enclosures as they are, according to Tony Herring, the best ones for the job.
The Fibox MNX polycarbonate enclosure measures 130 x 80 x 35 mm and has an IP 67 rating.
Its smooth plastic base offers optimum housing for the electronics components.
It is supplied with a clear smoked grey cover and can be used continuously at temperatures up to 80C.
While the PCS units are manufactured in Manchester, Coni Electronics export 80% of its products to overseas clients, in India, Europe, the Middle East and countries in the Arctic Circle.
Consequently the units need to withstand very high and low temperatures, in both wet and dry conditions.
