Solutia Inc is standardizing on Asset Management Solutions (AMS) software packages from Fisher-Rosemount for installation in all Solutia chemical processing plants throughout North America and Europe.

AMS changes the way plants manage intelligent devices, supporting plant personnel in device configuration, calibration, and diagnosis of equipment problems.

Benefits include faster commissioning of instrumentation, lower configuration and ongoing maintenance costs, reduced downtime, and accurate documentation, an important feature in many regulated industries.

AMS, which supports both the HART and FOUNDATION fieldbus communications protocols, is a key building block of the Fisher-Rosemount PlantWeb field-based architecture.

Choice of the Fisher-Rosemount AMS package was based on a successful software trial at a pilot unit in the Solutia W.G.Krummrich plant in Illinois, according to Glenn Mertz, Senior Fellow in their Enterprise Engineering Advanced Controls Group.

An average saving of $200 per field device was reported for installation and commissioning of about 70 instruments.

In addition, trial results indicated that a small to medium size production unit could save at least $8,000 annually in day-to-day instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

"The high Return on Investment (ROI) with a payback faster than one year helped win corporate approval of the AMS software," Mertz said.

"We followed the development of this technology for a long time, but the Krummrich trial provided compelling evidence that AMS is able to contribute significant savings in process industry plants." The initial purchase includes 17 AMS software packages and support services, yet payback is expected within one year due to savings rendered by AMS in the commissioning and ongoing maintenance of smart field instrumentation.

In the UK, Solutia has a manufacturing plant in Newport, S.Wales, employing 260 people.

Output in 1998 was 91000 tons of raw materials used in such products as washing powder, floor coverings, car windows and tyres.

Preventive maintenance expenditure in this plant exceeds ?150,000 pa, which is an area where AMS technology will assist significantly in targeting equipment for maintenance attention.

Glenn Mertz plans "monthly teleconferences with personnel at all production sites to make sure the individuals know how to run AMS and that they understand all its functions.

We want them using it as a daily maintenance tool.".
