Mill settles on method of checking worn
pulleys
Billerud AB, Gruvons Mill ordered an independent study to evaluate equipment for checking worn pulleys, and after choosing the Fixturlaser PAT, it has invested in eight systems
PAT from Fixturlaser greatly reduces operating and maintenance costs, both of which can be very expensive Regular checks and alignments of machinery will help reduce these costs, of which worn pulley drives are one of the main causes

Wide sales success for Pulley Alignment Tool
The PAT Pulley Alignment Tool is designed for simple but very accurate alignment of pulleys, and sales have surpassed all expectations, according to the manufacturer
3D laser measuring from constructional drawings
Three-dimensional measuring can now be carried out directly from constructional calculations: for example, drawings and CAD-models for fast and easy detection of deviations.
Operating with worn pulleys drastically increases skidding and belt wear.
This can be avoided with regular checking.
At Billerud AB, Gruvons Mill (who selected Fixturlaser PAT in order to cut costs) a simple measure such as changing pulley belts reduced belt skidding by as much as 77%.
The company ordered an independent study to establish how repair and maintenance could be cut and to determine which instrument was the most suitable for their measuring and alignment needs.
Three different products from three manufacturers were tested.
The mills maintenance staff participated in the tests (which were carried out by students as an exam project) and contributed with their opinions.
It was found that Fixturlaser PAT, consisting of two identical laser units, fastened by magnets onto the belt grooves, was very easy to set up and to handle.
The instrument gives readings from two laser beams.
Among the advantages was the capacity to read angle differentiation on one unit and parallel displacement on the other unit, simultaneously.
Another big advantage was that the belt shield does not have to be removed during measuring and registration.
As PAT is fastened directly onto the belt grooves, readings can be made regardless of thickness of material of the pulley drives.
The technical department has already invested in 8 PAT's and claims that the ease of handling allows for use of the Fixturlaser instrument by all maintenance staff.
