Flow meters face rigours of offshore production

A Flotech Solutions product story

Flotech Solutions has designed and supplied metal tube VA flow meters for use on oil and gas production wells in high-pressure multi-point chemical injection systems made by Haskel International.

The Haskel IRCD (Injection Rate Control Devices) are used in panels or skid mounted systems by most North Sea operators.

The choice of an MT3809 variable area flow meter from Flotech was originally based on functionality, reliability and ease of maintenance in the arduous offshore conditions.

With no rotating parts and tolerance to liquids carrying particulates, the MT3809 has proved well suited to this application, after many years of successful service believes Flotech.

The mechanical meter display on the Flotech VA meter provides a simple local indication of the flow rate, allowing the operator to adjust this according to requirements, with no electrical connections needed to multiple units in a control panel.

Use of a flow meter monitoring system rather than a metering injection pump allows pressure for multiple injection points to be provided by just one pump.

Even when providing duty and standby pumps in one system, the approach has improved system reliability and economy said Flotech.

For the highest pressure applications, at up to 1,000 Atmospheres pressure (15000 psi) or for corrosive applications, the meter bodies are constructed from inconel or titanium, instead of stainless steel.

Meters are available for various flow ranges from 20mL/hr to 3000 L/hr, using meter bodies from 0.5" to 2" bore.

Haskel International is a manufacturer of hydraulically and pneumatically driven, high pressure systems and accessories with a specialisation in high pressure technology applied to oil and gas production.

Methanol down-hole injection is used to prolong the effective oil well life.

Other liquids are injected at various points in the system typically to provide methanol based corrosion inhibitors and similar products.
