A specially designed Arpex split hub coupling has been supplied by Flender Power Transmission for use with a fan drive at UKAEA Harwell.

The coupling unit was supplied through distributor BSL to Johnson Controls, and is an ARF 6 size 267-6 with JJ hub design.

It features split hubs, torsionally stiff platepacks and a double platepack design.

The coupling was installed in an area where the shafts could not be moved, meaning that a split hub provided the ideal solution, with Arpex being selected for its ease of assembly, high torque and the ability to accommodate shaft misalignment.

It was supplied bored and keyed, and installed by Flender engineers.

Benefits of this coupling include a torque range of up to 6100Nm, along with the ability to accommodate angular misalignment, with high circumferential speeds and short DBSE (distance between shaft ends) possible.

The coupling can also be assembled without moving the driving or driven shafts, a key advantage where space is tight and production time crucial.
