Helical gearboxes take over at UK power plant

A Siemens Flender product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 30, 2003

A Midlands power station is set to replace all its existing gearboxes with Flender FZG helical units.

Flender's legendary FZG helical units have always been sound purchases to customers in the power industry, thanks to the FZG's excellent torque characteristics, impressive all-round performance and outstanding reliability in all conditions.

Once again this product has proven itself, as one of Flender's major customers at a power station in the Midlands found.

The customer had had 36 non-Flender units since 1995, but was finding reliability a problem.

About 12 months ago an FZG unit was installed, and the customer was so impressed by its performance over the year that another 35 Flender FZG units are set to replace all the existing units.

Flender has already supplied 16 units and will be providing the remaining 20 units over the next 12 months.

These FZGs are double reduction helical gear units in a cooling tower design, size H2NV 07, and with ratios of 10.648:1.

They come complete with motor lantern, integral coupling, shaft driven flange pump and backstop, and each weigh 850kg.

Benefits of this special type of unit are the superior arrangement of the low speed bearing.

A dry well arrangement prevents oil leaks and ensures better reliability.

Flender also designed a special mounting flange to enable the Flender units to suit the existing mounting holes.
