Siemens Flender is the world's biggest supplier of drive technology for wind turbines, providing gear units, couplings, generators and power convertors.

Flender's units are in operation all over the world, and the company carries out regular maintenance on the growing number of wind turbines situated around the UK, both on site and in the Flender factory in West Yorkshire.

Many of these wind turbines have been operating for more than a decade, often in hostile environments, and during scheduled maintenance periods Flender engineers carry out exhaustive checks, restore original tolerances and thereby ensure that these units continue to provide many more years of round-the-clock service.

Flender introduced the gear concept for wind energy back in 1989 through its Winergy subsidiary, a concept that has since been adopted by others.

The commonly used combinations are one planetary gear stage (low-speed gear unit stage) with two helical gear stages (high-speed stage), or two planetary gear stages and a helical gear stage.

Flender currently offers four main types of gear units, covering power ranges from 600 to 2500kW with an appropriate range of sizes.
