Couplings upgrade coating machine throughput

A Siemens Flender product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 21, 2007

UPM Caledonian Paper has used Flender Arpex couplings to upgrade a coating machine at its Irvine works.

When UPM Caledonian Paper needed to upgrade a coating machine at its Irvine works, it selected a total of 53 Flender Arpex couplings in varying sizes and lengths.

The coating machine processes 750 tonnes of lightweight coated paper per day, and the new couplings were installed during a scheduled 15-day shutdown at the beginning of March.

Caledonian Paper's project supervisor Paul Tully said the Flender couplings were easy to assemble within the tight timeframe; Arpex couplings feature a split-hub design, and so are ideal for installations where space is tight and time is short without moving the driving or driven shafts.

They are high-torque torsionally rigid devices and can where required also be ATEX-approved.

The coating machine runs 24 hours per day at the busy plant, so reliability was an essential requirement, and throughput is expected to be improved as a direct result of the upgrade.
