Within weeks of investing in its own thermal imaging camera, condition-monitoring specialist S-Tech saved its customer the expense of costly downtime as well as a repair bill of GBP 20,000 or more.

Through the company's ThermaCAM from Flir Systems, Partner Brian Marples noticed a hotspot on a substation cabinet.

Closer investigation showed a contact on a capacitor operating at 350C.

"It was ready to blow", Marples confirmed.

"But thanks to prompt action the fault was corrected before it became a costly failure".

Initially S-Tech hired in its thermal imaging cameras as they were needed for its nationwide service.

However not only was this proving costly as business increased but also availability was becoming a problem.

Speed of response and quality of service are the basis on which S-Tech Condition Monitoring was founded.

These principles were being compromised as a camera was not always available for hire when S-Tech's customers called for a thermal imaging survey.

As a result work had to be turned away.

"Having used other cameras, we chose the ThermaCAM simply because it's the best on the market", Brian Marples continues.

"It is so easy to use and has the capacity to store a large number of images so that I can survey during the week and catch up with my reports on the weekend".

Image quality and the efficiency of the wizard-guided software were also cited.

"The flexibility of the camera and its reporting software allows us to go that extra mile for our customers", Marples concludes.

"As standard we create reports that describe the fault visually, graphically and narratively.

We also recommend a course of remedial action, provide a work schedule and the means by which management can chart progress - condition management, not just monitoring".
