Dartford Crossing is to replace its previously used extinguishers with new Firemaster Firestopper ABFFC extinguishers.

Fire safety is a major priority at the Dartford tunnels and bridge where some 160,000 vehicles cross the Thames on the M25 every day, and Dartford Crossing chose to replace its previously used extinguishers with new Firemaster Firestopper ABFFC extinguishers.

The company is in the process of converting its fleet of patrol vehicles to carry Firestopper 3-litre extinguishers, each one replacing the three different extinguishers formerly employed.

While enhancing the facility's fire safety with this 'revolutionary' all-purpose media, the switch has saved space, simplified procedures and produced a range of short and long-term savings, since different extinguishers no longer have to be used for different fires.

Firestopper deals with all situations including oil, petrol, and electrical fires, yet has demonstrated greater efficiency and economy ounce-for-ounce than other agents in use.

The aqueous biological film forming catalyst media is neither a foam nor a wetting agent, but a singular formulation combining outstanding endothermic capacity with novel saponification properties to create a tough continuous film barrier.

It has been shown to achieve faster knock-down with no flashback, an exceptional immediate temperature reduction for fast cool-down and long retardant reliability.

As well as suppressing explosions, a further advantage of this media at Dartford was that no emulsification takes place, with quick and easy clean-up and the prevention of extended damage.

ABFFC is biodegradable, non-toxic, pH neutral and non-irritating to protect both the environment and personnel.

Its water-like viscosity allows a wide spectrum of use and it is compatible with sea, brackish and fresh water.

The refillable extinguishers have steel cylinders with an internal polypropylene lining and give a controlled discharge.

They are made in the UK with BSI accreditation to BS EN3 and Kite-marked, and carry a 5-year warranty.
