Take a check on PUWER 98

Huddersfield based Fenay Machine Safety offers a checklist for those who need some guidance on compliance with PUWER 98.

For those who need some guidance on compliance with PUWER 98 (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998), Huddersfield based Fenay Machine Safety offers the following checklist.

Identify machines that have a greater stopping time than 10s: these will require retrofitting of appropriate braking systems to bring them into compliance.

Undertake an audit of machine guarding: if it does not exist or does not meet current specifications then new or supplementary guarding will be required.

Ensure that machines are brought up to modern standards in terms of safety features.

Arrange machine specific operator training on the new or additional features, for example: how to use the machine correctly/safely; how and when to undertake regular service/maintenance.

Obtain certification of compliance: this is always advisable in order to provide evidence for health and safety.

"Because PUWER 98 relates to machinery and equipment it applies to everyone - even a one-man operation", explains Fenay Machine Safety Director Richard Wrigley.

"Once you are aware of the risk then, as a business, you have a duty to do something about it".
