Two-day short course will highlight the key fundamental principles affecting the performance of seals in regular use and introduce many recent developments.

The latest in a series of introductory courses on seals and sealing will be held at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Cambridgeshire on 9th and 10th April 2008 The two-day short course will highlight the key fundamental principles affecting the performance of seals that are in regular use and introduce many of the recent developments in this rapidly evolving area

Manufacturers and operators of machinery must meet increasing demands of reduced environmental impact, cost reductions, increased reliability and shorter development time.

New seal designs and material developments are being introduced with increasing frequency, making it progressively more difficult to keep aware of progress.

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the important fundamentals of sealing technology, an overview of current developments across the broad range of seal types available and information of sources of more detailed information.

The advances in seal designs and materials that are continuously occurring can provide: significant increases in reliability; dramatic cost savings in assembly; improved compliance with emission requirements; and even a combination of all three.

The course will introduce the major types of seals available.

It will describe the most popular types of static, rotary and reciprocating seals, the basic methods of operation, critical parameters to be considered for successful sealing and key material types.

The limitations of individual designs and materials will also be discussed.

In addition to a set of lecture notes all delegates will receive a copy of the recently published "Seals and sealing handbook" 5th Edition, authored by the course presenter.

Attendance will also permit free access to the museum during the days of the course and a one hour organised tour will also be included.
