Disel gen-sets do well in Eastern Europe

A Frost and Sullivan product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 17, 2007

While the diesel gen-sets market in Eastern Europe is doing well the Western European market is showing signs of maturity.

The outlook for the diesel gen-sets market in Eastern Europe is positive, given the increase in commercial, manufacturing and industrial activities.

However, the landscape of the Western European counterpart is fairly mature.

New analysis from Frost and Sullivan, European Diesel Gen-set Markets Forecasts, finds that the markets earned revenues of US $958.2 million in 2006 and estimates this to reach US $1,195 million in 2013.

"Sound economic growth and increasing investments in infrastructure in the Eastern European countries are propelling the European gen-sets market forward", says Frost and Sullivan Research Analyst Aarthi Balachandran.

"Demand for power is expected to gather pace in this region and as commercial, as well as industrial activities significantly increase, the gen-set market will witness growth".

The Eastern European countries are increasingly gaining significance due to the rapid development in all spheres of their economies and the markets here hold tremendous potential for gen-sets, which is likely to bolster overall market performance.

Hence it is important for manufacturers to clearly delineate their target markets in order to gain improved market share.

On the other hand, countries in Western Europe are being branded as mature markets and are exhibiting moderate levels of growth.

As a result, new opportunities for sales are hard to come by.

The diesel gen-set market in Europe is a complex one, as the individual constituents are in various stages on their growth curves.

"The gen-set market in the Western European countries is gradually approaching saturation, thus restraining growth in the overall market", explains Balachandran.

"With companies striving to gain a firm foothold in the market, gen-set manufacturers are witnessing price-focused competition".

Accordingly, manufacturers will need to adapt their product line continuously to meet end-user needs.

Another significant factor that may affect the market is the development of alternative sources of power generation such as renewable energy, fuel cells and gas gen-sets, which can inhibit market growth rates in the long term.

Considering the high levels of saturation of the Western European markets, gen-set manufacturers will benefit by focussing on niche application areas.

Manufacturers that offer quality products at competitive prices and have a strong distributor and dealer network will be able to strengthen their position in the markets.

Product quality, reputability and the ability to provide customers with total maintenance, after-sales and technical support are expected to help the manufacturers gain a strong presence in the market and will also help generate repeat business.

European Diesel Gen-set Markets Forecasts is part of the Energy and Power Growth Partnership Service, which also includes research on the Middle East and African gen-set markets, the Latin American gen-set market, the South East Asian power rental markets and the North American gen-sets market.
