Frazer-Nash is providing essential programme management to GIWS to ensure the munition is developed and delivered to specification.

Frazer-Nash has won a new contract to support the development of the SMart (Sensor Fuzed Munition for the Artillery) munition, following the announcement by the Ministry of Defence that it plans to procure the new munition The contract, which runs until December 2010, is with Gesellschaft fur Intelligente Wirksysteme(GIWS)

The munition is a crucial precision element of the military's future artillery and one that enhances its ability to defeat armoured targets over long ranges.

The contract involves Frazer-Nash providing essential programme management to GIWS to ensure the munition is developed and delivered to specification and to ensure it meets the rigid requirements in terms of the environment, safety, reliability and maintainability.

The contract covers areas including safety inspection work, ensuring the munition can be safely operated by personnel while in service, as well as conducting an environmental audit to ensure it meets the requirements of current environmental legislation both through its life and at disposal.

Frazer-Nash Group Leader Dave Dutson said: "The announcement by the MoD that it is to procure the SMart munition marks a significant step for the military and provides an important new strategic capability for use in future warfare".
