Sealing problem solved at BP Grangemouth

A FTL Seals Technology product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 2, 2000

At BP Grangemouth, high density polyethylene powder was leaking from ineffective braided packing and FTL Seals supplied a Split Meridian Meco Modular Seal and adapter plate without purge as a solution

Sometimes, off the shelf seals are just not effective.

In one such case at BP Grangemouth, high density polyethylene powder was leaking from ineffective braided packing causing not only product loss, but also external bearing failure.

The originally fitted braided packing had damaged the shaft and powder was getting past the packing and into the bearing causing grease contamination and causing overheating and subsequent bearing failure.

The application was a horizontal screw conveyor, stationed several storeys above the ground.

FTL Seals Technology's total package was to design a Split Meridian Meco Modular Seal and adapter plate without purge to solve the problem.

This involved carrying out an on-site survey as well as regular monitoring once the seal was manufactured and installed.

However, once the new seal was installed, no further problems arose.
