Modified materials produce tailored properties

A FTL Seals Technology product story

Derived from standard PTFE, a new product - modified PTFE - is created by copolymerisation with a small quantity of a perfluorinated modifier and reduction of the molecular weight.

Although modified PTFE can be processed by the same methods used for standard PTFE, it has a clearly improved profile of properties, such as reduced cold flow and permeation as well as smaller pore volume and a lower stretch void index (SVI).

For over 30 years, ElringKlinger Kunststofftechnik and FTL Seals have been technology leaders in the field of seals and engineering design elements.

For its customers around the world, FTL Seals develops and produce individual, user-oriented solutions from PTFE or PTFE compounds and other high-performance plastics as well as PTFE composite components, including plastics or metals.

The components successfully stand the test of the toughest requirements in the field - at high levels of cost effectiveness and reliability.

Standard PTFE, has an exceptionally wide thermal application range.

It offers virtually unlimited chemical resistance as well as being resistant to light, weather and hot water vapour.

It has very good sliding properties, good electric and dielectric properties, it is anti-adhesive and physiologically harmless.

Compounds based on PTFE and modified PTFE are filled with glass fibres, carbon fibres, carbon, graphite, molybdenum sulphide, bronze or organic fillers (high-performance thermoplastics).

Fillers are used to achieve a multiple of the material's original wear resistance and thermal conductivity as well as a significant reduction of cold flow under load and reduction of thermal expansion.

FTL Seals can help in selecting the optimum material or semi-finished product.

This assures that users will receive a tailored and cost-effective solution best meeting their needs.
