Oven lining material improves process stability

A Fujikura Europe product story

Ford Malaysia (FoM) was having serious problems meeting a strict paint curing specification with its existing electro-dip (ED) oven.

Ford Malaysia (FoM) was having serious problems meeting a strict paint curing specification with its existing electro-dip (ED) oven.

Try as the company's engineers might, it was proving very difficult to meet the requirement of 170C for at least 20min defined for a prestigious model of car.

After evaluating a number of possibilities, FoM found that lining the ED oven with Fujihokka sheet proved to be the most feasible and cost effective solution.

Fujihokka is a patented high emissivity material (90% emissivity over the 1-30um wavelength range) developed by Fujikura, Japan and marketed by Fujikura Europe.

The material has exceptional thermal properties and is ideal for use in heating, cooling or drying/curing applications to improve performance and save energy.

Fujihokka oven lining has been proven in commercial applications in various industries with internationally renowned companies such as Siemens Westinghouse, ABB and Honda also enjoying the benefits of Fujihokka after recent installation.

After applying Fujihokka oven lining late in 2003, FoM has noted several improvements after several months continuous operation.

The effective metal temperature (EMT) of the car bodies has been improved by 30%.

The improved EMT profile has permitted a reduction in the oven zone temperatures of 10 to 15C without affecting the quality of the ED coating.

And the resulting energy savings are in excess of 15%.

Siva Kumar Krishnan, Area Paintshop Manager at FoM, states: "Fujihokka high emissivity oven lining has allowed a more efficient transfer of thermal energy within our ED oven, thus reducing heat loss and saving energy without compromising the quality of Ford products in any way".

FoM is now planning to line more of its ovens with Fujihokka as part of its continuous efforts to improve the production process and quality.
