Fulton Boiler Works has supplied one of its factory reconditioned Series E steam boilers to Kent based Unigro as part of its patented growing system for the production of fresh pesticide-free fruit, vegetables and herbs, which can be grown throughout the year, without any of the constraints associated with climate and environment The gas-fired Fulton 30E vertical boiler is used to produce steam that is passed through Unigro's continual flow sterilisation unit in which temperatures of 130C are achieved

The unit pasteurises growing substrate, which is used in the sealed, controlled environment tunnel where the crops are cultivated.

The pasteurisation process destroys any contaminants in the substrate that may affect healthy plant growth without the risk of burning or chemical degradation.

Commenting on the process, Keith Hamp of Unigro says: "Fulton were chosen because of their reputation within the industry and recommendations from people with past experience of their reliability.

We also knew that they could be trusted to supply a thoroughly reconditioned boiler".

He goes on to say that Unigro's system has proved so successful that they are planning to adapt the processing machine to pasteurise household waste to produce compost material.
