Software models potential fire hazards

A Fauske and Associates product story

Fauske and Associates has upgraded its FATE facility flow, aerosol, thermal and explosion model software.

Fauske and Associates has upgraded its FATE facility flow, aerosol, thermal and explosion model software.

The software, which runs on PCs and workstations, has new features added that enable the modelling and analyses of potential fire hazards at nuclear and chemical facilities.

Until now, fire and safety analyses of nuclear power plants, nonreactor fuel cycle facilities and waste facilities have traditionally been handbook lookups to define the parameters for accident scenarios.

In contrast, the new FATE software allows safety engineers to apply established principles and modelling techniques used in reactor safety analysis codes, to create a multiple-scenario fire hazards analysis.

"For the past five years we have been involved with an international fire modelling project where we have worked on fire modelling validation studies", said Martin G Plys, PhD, FAI's VP of Waste Technology.

"The addition of these new fire models to FATE is timely as there are now a number of new regulatory guidance documents for fire hazards analysis and fire risk analysis which our clients need to address".

The upgraded software integrates thermal-hydraulics, structural temperature response, fire and combustion sources, aerosol entrainment, aerosol transport and deposition models, explicit calculation of initial source terms, facility leak path factors, smoke movement, and target temperatures to create valid models of likely fire movement and containment.
