The new EA Engineering Recommendation G5/4 tries to ensure that the levels of harmonics in the public electricity supply do not constitute a problem for other users of that supply.
G5/4 identifies consumers at their point of common coupling (PCC) to the supply and therefore affects domestic, commercial and industrial users.
The new recommendation was raised because of the vast expansion in use today of rectifiers, resulting in increased harmonics.
Everything from rail traction supplies to TVs and washing machines and including industrial drives and controls now use greater numbers of rectifiers.
For equipment manufacturers to comply with G5/4 they must identify the harmonic currents generated by the equipment under defined conditions.
The users of the equipment must ensure the compatibility of their network and comply with the appropriate requirements.
