Granta MI to feature powder metallurgy database

A Granta Design product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Oct 22, 2009

The Global Powder Metallurgy Database (GPMD) will be made available as a data module within the Granta MI materials information system.

This announcement was made by Granta Design and the European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA).

The GPMD was launched in 2004 as a joint project between the regional PM trade associations, the EPMA and its sister organisations in North America (MPIF) and Japan (JPMA).

The database contains 3,500 lines of data providing physical, mechanical and fatigue information for hundreds of materials of relevance to powder metallurgy and metal injection moulding.

These technologies, which are based on the high-temperature sintering of a variety of metallic and alloy powders, are continually and rapidly evolving.

They are of interest to a range of industrial sectors, notably the automotive industry.

They are particularly suited to designs with requirements such as near-net shape, the single-process production of complex parts or porosity.

The database provides the necessary property and durability data to compare these materials with other options and to enable designers and engineers to make informed choices.

Granta MI enables the creation of a single corporate materials information resource, integrating data from in-house testing and design, other proprietary sources and trusted references.

A simple web browser user interface allows authorised users to browse, search and apply this data and to export it for use in engineering design and other software.

Providing the GPMD as a Granta MI data module enables fast, efficient digital access.

The data is available alongside other materials references and in-house materials information in a single, integrated system.

Existing users of Granta MI can add the data module to their installation, while other companies now have an option for sharing access to the GPMD data across their organisations.
