Fair acquisition provides Taiwanese base

GDS reckons it has become truly global with the GBP 1 million acquisition of Taiwan-based Fair Electronics, which now becomes GDS Taiwan.

The acquisition, effective immediately in July 2002, sees GDS taking on a low-cost supplier with the intention of raising the calibre of Fair's offering.

Previously a general manufacturer of commercial monitor and electronics equipment, GDS Taiwan, as it will be known, will become more focussed under the direction of its new owners.

Fair Electronics, based in Taipei, was established 20 years ago and manufactures LCD and CRT display monitors.

Ian Hudson, Commercial Director for GDS, explains "This is a strategic acquisition for us.

Both in manufacturing and in sales and after-sales support, this Taiwanese presence immediately gives GDS a local base for the Far East, as well as extending our global capabilities across the world markets".

"Since the merger of Emco Electronics and CA and G Elettronica to form GDS, we are becoming a truly global name in information displays.

With the acquisition of Fair Electronics, GDS immediately gains a foothold in the Far Eastern markets.

Fair gives us an Asian base, with access to customers in China and Asia Pacific countries.

It will also strengthen our supply chain and gives us purchasing capability in the region, which can be managed in situ".

Fair's current manufacturing facility in Taipei has the capacity to produce half a million units a year.

All staff employed at Fair Electronics, whose turnover was in the region of GBP 12 million, will be transferred to the new GDS Taiwan organisation.

The operation will be run by Ocean Tseng as General Manager.
