Paris passenger transit system under
Fanuc control
A new automated passenger transit system at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris is based on a triple-redundant security architecture using GE Fanuc products and expertise.
A new automated passenger transit system, the People Mover, was opened in July 1999 at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris To ensure vital passenger safety, the security automation is based on a triple-redundant security architecture using GE Fanuc products and expertise

Over 28 million passengers fly from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris every year, making it the busiest airport in continental Europe for passenger traffic.
In order to ensure more rapid and comfortable transfer of passengers between the various airport buildings, the Paris airport will open the first line of a new transport system.
This will replace the present shuttle bus service, which is no longer able to meet the requirements of a big international airport.
An additional line is to be opened.
Five stations on the People Mover line will serve terminals 1 and 2, two multi-storey carparks and the TGV station along a total length of four kilometres.

The 32 carriages on the line will be able to carry 45,000 travellers every day, in its18 hours of operation.
The People Mover is a fully automatic cable transport system.
The carriages are driven by cables on the tracks, and wheels in the stations.
The carriages never come to a complete standstill in the stations, but keep moving at a speed of 0.3 m per second.
This low speed enables people to get on and off comfortably.
When a carriage leaves a station, it grips onto an acceleration cable that accelerates it to the speed of the main cable (10 m/s).
After 80 metres, the main cable is automatically gripped and the acceleration cable is released.
By this means, the carriage is driven at speeds up to 36 km/h.
When it enters the next station, the sequence is reversed.
The main cable is released, a deceleration cable is gripped, and the speed of the deceleration cable is gradually reduced to 0.3 m/sec.
This cable is now released and the carriage is driven through the station by means of its wheels.
PLC control The parent organisation STRM (Service Technique des Remontes Mecaniques) is charged with verifying system security.
The People Mover is fully automated using standard GE Fanuc Series 90T - 70 PLCs, with the security system automation ensured also by Series 90T - 70, with a triple-redundant architecture (TMR).
With very strict requirements imposed to ensure the highest safety of passengers, supplementary mechanisms have been added to the conventional TMR architecture.
For example, an external voting unit, located at the base of the relay that controls the internal security system, provides 2oo3 voting on the security outputs of the three independent automated systems to ensure high systems integrity - if one output differs from the other two outputs, it is disregarded.
An external "sequencer" automatically triggers a periodic test every 20 minutes on each of the automatic systems in turn, in order to verify its functionality.
Also, the programs of the 3 automatic systems were developed in "C" language and compiled with 3 different compilers to avoid identical breakdown modes.
The security automation controls the following: - Interval between vehicles (by block) - Vehicle speed (without contact) - Cable speed and direction of rotation - Cable tension and rupture - Transfer between cables (acceleration cable, main cable, deceleration cable) - Vehicle position and speed control is assured by means of sensors connected to Genius(r) units installed along the track.
The advantages of the decentralised Genius(r) inputs/outputs were a decisive factor in the choice of GE Fanuc products.
Control Centre The concept described comprises standard PLCs integrated in a specific architecture.
GE Fanuc's expertise in the field of safety applications was very beneficial in winning the contract.
The control of the People Mover transport system is monitored by two people in a centralized control station using GE Fanuc's Cimplicity supervisory system.
The control centre will ensure that travellers reach their aircraft in comfort and at speed. Request a free brochure from GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms UK ...
