Plugin aid for automated scanner

A Geomagic product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 24, 2006

Plugin provides real-time processing and visualisation of physical objects as they are captured by automated scanning system.

Geomagic is supporting Steintek's Mobilescan 3D automated scanner system with a plugin that provides real-time processing and visualisation of physical objects as they are captured by the scanning system.

The free plugin, available from Steintek, is integrated with Geomagic Qualify computer-aided inspection and Geomagic Studio digital reconstruction software.

"We are pleased that Steintek is using our agile platform to offer additional value to its Mobilescan 3D customers," said Andrew Stein, VP of Marketing, Product and Business Development for Geomagic.

"This is an example of how Geomagic works with its optical measurement system partners to help users realise significant productivity gains from DSSP".

Eliana de Santis, Steintek President, said: "We are optimising the production cycle time, minimising the time the user needs to reverse-engineer a physical part or inspect an as-built part against its CAD model, and maximising the gains by extending the processing speed and flexibility of the Steintek system".

The plugin enables real-time processing and graphics display, with automated alignment and creation of datums and features.

The automated scanner provides full scanning or selected data-gathering with resolution of 3um and accuracy of +/-10um without the need to interchange parts or interfere in the measurement process.

The system captures large areas at speed of 25,600 points per second with 10um accuracy or more than 50,000 points per second with 20um accuracy.

The rotary axes allow an accurate sensor and object position that guarantees the overall system accuracy.

When an object is scanned, measurement data is immediately displayed on the screen as a regular ordered data set.

The plugin allows users in inspection applications to see exactly what has been scanned and how it has been scanned.

Using the plugin, users can do what-if analyses to optimise and adjust filter options and immediately see results on scan data.

Data doesn't have to be scanned over and over, which increases productivity.

The plugin provides capabilities for real-time processing during scanning that include: automatic scan data filtering as scan data is being captured; real-time volumetric area of interest (all data outside of this area is clipped); all scans are in a single coordinate system, eliminating the need for manual registration and reducing post-scanning processing; parameterised edge detection preserves sharp contours; adjustable noise reduction smoothes the surface; and variable filter angle removes data not picked up accurately by the scanner and improves surface data quality.
