Expansion answers continuing blind rivet demand

A Gesipa Blind Riveting Systems product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team May 28, 2003

Gesipa Blind Riveting Systems has increased capacity for manufacturing its Polygrip range following continual growth of the product, which has averaged 20% per year over the last five years.

Within just 48 hours of delivery at Gesipa Blind Riveting Systems of Keighley, West Yorks, a GBP 130,000 high-performance coil-fed wire nail machine was installed and producing the company's fast growing Polygrip blind rivet range around the clock at its maximum production rate of 800 parts per minute.

Gesipa, which manufactures over 300 million rivets and 40 million rivet nuts a year and is a leading riveting tool and engineering solution provider, installed the Wafios N90 PLC controlled machine for producing rivet mandrels up to 6.4mm diameter.

Such has been the take up of its Polygrip range, that the company had to increase capacity following continual growth of the product, which has averaged 20% per year over the last five years.

Explains Managing Director Simon Gledhill: "Growth has come from a host of new applications where we have engineered out bolts, welding and other fittings, primarily in the automotive, construction and sheet metal fabrication sectors, replacing these methods with our Polygrip 'anti-rattle' blind rivet.

When applied, Polygrip expands radially to provide a complete hole fill giving a tighter, weather proof joint.

And because of its design, a single rivet is able to span and replace three conventional rivet sizes which reduce user stocks and costs".

The Wafios machine was selected, justified and commissioned by a team of shopfloor employees to which Simon Gledhill maintains: "It was totally their project and they certainly made sure it exactly fitted the bill.

The final proof was that it went into full production without a hitch within 48 hours of being delivered".

Unlike many companies at the moment, Gesipa is committed to manufacture at Keighley and believes through investment in production development, application engineering and the latest production technology, it can compete against overseas suppliers.

Over the last 10 years, some GBP 8 million has been invested at the Keighley plant against an overall year on year sales growth of at least 10%.
