A Garfield Hydrol product story

With an intensive work schedule to maintain, hydraulic cylinders manufacturer Garfield Hydrol needed precision planning to prevent operational disruptions when it relocated to a new factory

With a full order book and an intensive work schedule to maintain, hydraulic cylinders manufacturer Garfield Hydrol needed precision planning to prevent operational disruptions when it relocated to a new £3 million purpose-built factory in Fengate, Peterborough.

So managing director Trevor Garfield decided to ensure a smooth transition by using lorries owned by parent company Ray Smith Group to transport his high-tech computer controlled machinery around three miles from the old factory to the new.

"We had been planning the logistics of the move for about six months," said Trevor.

"We needed to hire cranes to load and unload the machinery but there were obvious benefits in terms of scheduling tasks and other efficiencies from using our own transport.

"We have invested heavily in new computer controlled machinery in the past year to take advantage of new market opportunities, so any unplanned down-time caused by the move would have been very disruptive to our operations.

Thanks to the support of our people, the move was completed successfully as planned." Garfield Hydrol manufactures hydraulic cylinders for equipment used in industries as diverse as construction, food, aircraft and nuclear.

It also supplies cylinders to the Ray Smith Group, which manufactures demountable container 'swop bodies', electro-hydraulic cantilever tail-lifts and other products that minimise operating costs and improve delivery times for road transport operators.

The whole group is expected to complete the relocation to the new factory on a 7.5-acre site by the end of October.
