Laser scanning company opens Singapore office

A GKS Inspection Services product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 26, 2007

GKS Inspection Services, headquartered in Detroit with offices in Minneapolis, India, and now Singapore, offers outsourced laser scanning services on a project basis.

GKS Inspection Services has recently opened a laser scanning and CAD modelling office in Singapore.

"GKS Singapore is an important part of our strategy for becoming the global leader in the 3D laser scanning services industry", said Armando Alonso, Vice President of GKS.

"GKS Singapore increases our worldwide reverse engineering and CAD modelling capabilities while also giving us entry into the Singaporean marketplace".

GKS Inspection Services is a division of Laser Design, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

GKS Inspection Services' Singapore team of engineers provides reverse engineering, first article inspection, and prototyping services.

The Singapore team can also perform failure analyses for customers.

With their 3D laser scanning expertise, the engineers create surface models from the 3D scan data (or "point clouds"), in a process known as reverse engineering.

GKS Singapore also uses inspection software to create a colour error deviation map that clearly delineates variations between the as-built part and the design intent.

GKS Singapore has a wide array of equipment including a Laser Design Surveyor DS-2020 laser scanner.

GKS Singapore's current customers are mainly in the consumer electronics and telecommunication market, and in the plastics moulding and die-casting industries.

The company is considering expanding into Malaysia in the next two years, as well as adding more engineering staff.

Laser scanning systems project laser light onto surfaces while cameras continuously triangulate the changing distance and profile of the laser as it sweeps along, enabling the object to be accurately replicated.

Laser scanners can quickly measure large parts while generating far greater numbers of data points than touch probes without the need for templates or fixtures.

Laser scanning replicates the complete geometry of a complex part to a high level of accuracy, often to within a thousandth of an inch.

Many companies would like to take advantage of the improved accuracy and speed provided by laser scanning but need to scan only a relatively small number of parts.

Such companies have difficulty justifying the cost of acquiring a laser scanner and training operators in its use.

GKS Inspection Services, headquartered in Detroit with offices in Minneapolis, India, and now Singapore, offers outsourced laser scanning services on a project basis.

A company simply sends a part to GKS and they create a very accurate CAD model or inspection report in a short period of time at a reasonable cost.

Alternately, GKS can dispatch trained metrologists to the customer's site using portable measuring devices.

GKS Inspection Services Plymouth lab is accredited by the A2LA for mechanical testing and calibration and features numerous CMMs, vision systems, 3D laser scanners, surface analysers and other inspection equipment.

GKS also has US offices in Minneapolis and Seattle and international locations in India, Korea, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the Netherlands.

The company's metrologists and engineers are experienced in the automotive, defence, electronics and many other manufacturing industries.
