Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon has been awarded the contract to design and deliver two complete DAF pump sets to the pretreatment water works at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

Gilkes, is a specialist in the design, manufacture, supply, installation and servicing of pumps and hydro turbines, and is one of the oldest independent "fluid engineering" companies based in the UK.

The prestigious contract will see Gilkes provide a complete turnkey solution for the water treatment works project, in which the company was called on to design, supply and deliver as well as decommission two diffused air floatation recycle (DAF) pump sets.

As part of the project, Gilkes will supply two pump sets to the Barrow pretreatment water works which feed the existing slow sand filters in the main treatment area.

The pretreatment works will be supplied and fitted with the two DAF pumps which will provide a useable and infinitely variable output in the range of 40 to120Ml/d.

This variable output will be required to operate automatically without manual intervention on an ongoing basis.

The pumps chosen for this project by Gilkes were the Robuschi type RCN 200-45 end suction single stage centrifugal pumps.

These were chosen based on their reputation for handling solids efficiently up to a diameter of 76mm which would prove vital in the low maintenance running of the pump sets.

The Robuschi pumps boast a flow rate of 170 litre/s against a total dynamic head of 70m.

Dennis Miller, Sales Manager for Gilkes explains: "This proved a very interesting problem for us to solve".

"We had to ensure the pumps we were to specify and supply could not only move the liquid sludge at the rate and pressure required, but they could also handle the solids present in sewerage".

Miller continues: "The Robuschi pumps we used are fantastic in environments like these, their reliability and efficiency are just what was required for this project and we are very pleased with the outcome".

The pumps used on this project achieved an impressive efficiency of 79% at the duty point thereby making a major contribution to the low operating costs for the entire project.

The pumps are directly coupled to 185kW four-pole 415/3/50 foot-mounted electric motors with the entire pump and motor combination securely mounted on fabricated steel baseplates.
