Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) is to adopt GT-Power and GT-Suite as its engine simulation and design tools.
GT-Suite is a true "virtual engine/powertrain/vehicle" simulation tool, which incorporates GT-Power.
With GT-Suite, it has become possible for the first time to simulate engine performance, vehicle dynamics, valvetrain dynamics, cooling systems, fuel injection systems and cranktrain dynamics - all within a single integrated tool.
BMW Group is a leader in high-end engine design and development.
It increasingly relies on advanced engineering simulations, in order to accelerate the pace of engine development, to introduce innovative features, and to stay at the forefront of engine technology.
As a part of this effort, the car company has now decided to move fully from its in-house engine simulation code Promo to GT-Power.
GT-Power was introduced at BMW five years ago, and its use has been increasing ever since.
Next step was starting the use of GT-Cool, an engine heat management analysis tool.
A year ago, BMW Group has decided to go farther, and upgraded all of its licences to the full GT-Suite, which contains both GT-Power and GT-Cool, plus four other applications (GT-Fuel, GT-Drive, GT-Vtrain and GT-Crank).
The latest move is a very significant further step in the relationship between both companies.
The reasons for the migration to GT-Suite include: sophisticated thermodynamics models needed for analysis of combustion and emissions, ability to model both engine performance and acoustics, high flexibility needed for advanced engine concepts, and the ability to carry out integrated cross-disciplinary simulations.
Further, an important factor in the decision was the rapid rate of development of GT-Suite, and the fast response of Gamma to development requests and needs.
In fact, the two companies are already working in partnership together to introduce new capabilities into GT-Suite, incorporating BMW specifications and knowhow.
