Innovative Sheffield company Gripple claims to be the best - and now it's official.
The company which has made its name developing wire joining and tensioning solutions for the agricultural and farming sector is celebrating after winning the "Best Factory" prize in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' (IMechE) prestigious Manufacturing Excellence Awards 2004 - an award that sets them apart as a beacon for best practice within the factory environment.
Gripple beat off the challenge of famous organisations such Corus, Ford, MG Rover Group, Leyland Trucks, Toyoda and BAE Systems to take the overall title - the first time a small and medium sized company has won.
The awards, announced at the Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London, are designed to encourage and reward high standards and innovative working practices in UK companies, while setting a benchmark for running a successful and competitive business.
Gripple, based in the Old West Gun Works, Savile Street East, Sheffield, won the Manufacturing Advisory Service Award for Manufacturing Excellence Overall title and the RSM Robson Rhodes Award for Manufacturing Excellence Best Small or Medium Enterprise title.
In addition, it was commended in two of the nine categories for which it had been short listed.
Managing Director Chris Middleton, who accepted the award with company founder and Executive Chairman Hugh Facey, said he was thrilled with the success: "This award is a great achievement for the company and testament to the hard work of everyone at Gripple week in, week out", said Middleton.
"The judges told us we won the overall category by some margin and that we had done exceptionally well in all categories".
