Flame retardants go up in price

Great Lakes Chemical Corp is to increase the price for pentabromodiphenyl oxide-based flame retardants by $0.10/lb in the Americas and by $220/mt in Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

In addition, the price for all grades of antimony trioxide will increase by $0.50/lb in the Americas and by $1,100/mt in Europe and the Asia Pacific region.

The price for other antimony derivatives will also increase dependent upon antimony content.

The company reports that the new pricing for pentabromodiphenyl oxide-based flame retardants - Great Lakes DE-71, Great Lakes DE-60F Special, Great Lakes DE-61 and Great Lakes DE-62 - reflects the increasing costs associated with the product line.

These products provide the highest level of flame retardant performance for flexible polyurethane foam applications such as commercial furnishings and automotive foams.

The price increase for antimony trioxide reflects continued increases in the London Metal Bulletin (LMB) value for antimony metal and its impact on the cost of finished antimony derivatives.

Further tightening of raw material supply is anticipated, at least through the balance of the year.

Antimony trioxide, sold under the trade names TMS, Timonox, Trutint and Microfine, is used as a synergist, along with brominated flame retardants, in flame retardant polymer formulations widely used in electrical and electronics applications.

Antimony trioxide is also an effective flame retardant in high performance PVC applications.
