A brand new mathematics educational resource has been made available to schools through the combined efforts of Setpoint Leicestershire, the NPL and the GTMA (Gauge and Toolmakers Association) The first metrology toolkits were handed over to Setpoints from around the country by Lord Sainsbury, Minister of State for Science at the BA festival of science at the University of Leicester on 10th September

Entitled "Understanding measurement with the metrology toolkit" the resource is aimed at students in the 11-14 age range, with the aim of getting more young people interested in metrology, the science of measurement.

Without precise, accurate measurement, cars could not be built, complex medical treatments could not be administered or new innovative products developed.

The metrology toolkit has been designed to create an awareness of industrial applications of mathematics using basic engineering measuring instruments such as micrometers, vernier callipers, go/no-go gauges and steel rules.

Trials using the pilot toolkit were carried out in Leicestershire schools where it was received extremely positively.

Comments from Leicestershire students such as "it was fun to use, different from what we usually do, interesting and useful for the future", showed that the practical application of the science of measurement can successfully take its place within the mathematics curriculum.

Enthusing young people about metrology will emphasise its importance and relevance to our society and encourage them to develop the vital skills industry needs.
