"Great news for bingo players" was the response of Roger Onions, GTMA President, to Gordon Brown's latest budget statement He continued; "We are seeing the demise of well run British companies on a daily basis, yet the Government is still not providing any assistance to manufacturing, the life-blood of our economy, while it is prepared to support other industries"

Free seminar explains aerospace supply chain
A morning seminar aimed at helping UK engineering companies participate in the aerospace supply chain has been organised by GTMA on 24th February at Warwick Manufacturing Group, Warwick University.
Once again, there was a resounding silence regarding the UK's industrial base, not only from the Chancellor, but from most of the media, which commented at length on the statement's impact on defence, the environment, personal finance and a myriad of other aspects but with hardly a murmur about manufacturing.
A survey of GTMA members, conducted immediately after the statement, elicited enormous disappointment that, yet again, the Government has ignored the plight of manufacturing.
While several members express relief that no further taxes were being levied on industry, most found nothing that would be of benefit to UK Manufacturing Plc.
The consensus was that events have proved that Brown got his figures wrong; his determination to ignore manufacturing is equally misjudged and will have much more serious long-term consequences.
Brown is finding GBP 20 billion to sustain his spending plans, it is a pity he seems unable to apportion some small percentage of that to the tax generating sectors of the economy.
